The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has used Elbit’s Spear vehicle-mounted mortar system during border security incidents in recent months, a senior company official said.

Colonel (res) Boaz Cohen, vice-president of land systems at Elbit System, told the Fire, Maneuvering, and Intelligence Conference in Tel Aviv on 15 May that the IDF “has a slightly different version” of the Spear called the Hanit (Javelin) that has “proven itself in a very effective manner in recent clashes”.
The IDF was not previously known to have acquired the Spear, which is a largely automated 120 mm mortar that can be carried on a 4x4 tactical vehicle.
