Forget the S-500 or Su-57 PAK-FA. Russia's Military Has Big Plans for the Future.

Russia has started planning for the development of a series of next-generation weapons to follow-on to systems such as the Sukhoi Su-57 PAK-FA and the S-500 surface-to-air missile (SAM) battery. These new systems—which the Russian government has not named—will be developed under future advanced State Armament Program.

“An important and key issue on our agenda is to define the beginning of the creation of yet another advanced state armament program,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting of the Kremlin’s Military Industrial Commission . Putin said that Russia has to start planning for its future defense needs now as it completes developmental programs that were funded under the current State Armament Plan (GPV-2027). “It is important for us to move further and start planning today the future development and production of advanced weapons and equipment that will define the image of the Russian Armed Forces in the long-term, for the next few decades,” Putin said. Japan's 'Izumo' was designed as aircraft carrier from start: Asahi

Image
Japan's 'Izumo' was designed as aircraft carrier from start: Asahi | Asia Times: "Japanese defense planners apparently believe that it pays to think ahead.

The Asahi Shimbun reported on Friday that Japan’s helicopter “destroyer” Izumo had been designed to be an aircraft carrier all along. The newspaper says former Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) executives have confirmed that the warship’s original blueprints called for it to be turned into an aircraft carrier.

“It is only reasonable to design (the Izumo) with the prospect of possible changes of the circumstances in the decades ahead,” a former MSDF executive told Asahi. “We viewed that whether the Izumo should be actually refitted could be decided by the government.”" Read More

A New, Chinese Airplane Design Could Reach Blazing Mach 5 Speeds

Image
A New, Chinese Airplane Design Could Reach Blazing Mach 5 Speeds: "Building a useful plane that's faster than Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound, is a difficult engineering challenge, but a team of researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences has a plan to pull it off.

The trick to making these faster-than-Mach 5, or hypersonic, vehicles is to build a "waverider"-shaped airframe and top it off with a "high-pressure capture wing," the researchers wrote in a December 2017 letter to the journal Science China. Waveriders are aircraft bodies shaped to skim along the top of the pressure wave created by their own supersonic flight — in essence, using the shock wave to increase the plane's lift, or the upward force that keeps a plane in flight. But the roofs of waveriders can also become "compression surfaces" — planes that surrounding air flows against, pushing the whole vehicle back toward the ground. High-pressure capture wings (HCWs) at…
