Forget the S-500 or Su-57 PAK-FA. Russia's Military Has Big Plans for the Future.

Russia has started planning for the development of a series of next-generation weapons to follow-on to systems such as the Sukhoi Su-57 PAK-FA and the S-500 surface-to-air missile (SAM) battery. These new systems—which the Russian government has not named—will be developed under future advanced State Armament Program.

“An important and key issue on our agenda is to define the beginning of the creation of yet another advanced state armament program,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting of the Kremlin’s Military Industrial Commission . Putin said that Russia has to start planning for its future defense needs now as it completes developmental programs that were funded under the current State Armament Plan (GPV-2027). “It is important for us to move further and start planning today the future development and production of advanced weapons and equipment that will define the image of the Russian Armed Forces in the long-term, for the next few decades,” Putin said. China teases its new stealth bomber

Image
Keeping in mind that the video image could very well bear little or no resemblance to the actual bomber, the bomber appears to be a large, cranked flying wing. Xian Aircraft Corporation H-20 Keeping in mind that the video image could very well bear little or no resemblance to the actual bomber, the bomber appears to be a large, cranked flying wing. Xian Aircraft CorporationPhoto by: Xian Aircraft Corporation AVIC, the Chinese conglomerate, teased audiences worldwide with the first official glimpse of the country's first stealth bomber. The preview comes at the end of an eight-minute video made to celebrate the Xian Aircraft Corporation's (XAC) 60th anniversary on May 8, 2018. The giant flying wing aircraft appears shrouded in canvas inside a high tech hangar. The visual resemblance to Northrup Grumman's 2015 Super Bowl ad showing off the B-21 Raider stealth bomber is presumably deliberate. It is likely AVIC's way of proclaiming that it's arrived, fast on American …

China Has Stolen Vast Amounts of Navy Submarine, Missile Data in Multiple Breaches from Contractor's Servers

Image
Chinese government-sponsored cyber thieves stole hundreds of gigabytes of data related to sensitive Navy undersea warfare programs from a government contractor earlier this year, a defense official familiar with details of the breach told USNI News on Friday. The official confirmed details reported in a Friday afternoon story in The Washington Post in which hackers took “614 gigabytes of material relating to a closely held project known as Sea Dragon, as well as signals and sensor data, submarine radio room information relating to cryptographic systems, and the Navy submarine development unit’s electronic warfare library.” The data is described in the story as sensitive but not classified. When contacted, Navy spokesman Lt. Marycate Walsh would not confirm the accuracy of the Post report but provided a statement on general cyber intrusions. “We treat the broader issue of cyber intrusion against our contractors very seriously. If such an intrusion were to occur, the appropriate partie…

US and Turkish Troops to Patrol in Northern Syria

Image
U.S. troops drive in a humvee along a road leading to the tense front line with Turkish-backed fighters near Manbij, Syria, on March 29.Photo by: AP Photo/Hussein Malla ISTANBUL -- Turkey's defense minister says Turkish and U.S. soldiers will patrol the key northern Syrian town of Manbij as part of a deal reached this week for the withdrawal of a Syrian Kurdish militia. Speaking in Brussels after a NATO summit late Friday, Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli said he met with his American counterpart James Mattis. "We had a very detailed, constructive and positive meeting on the Manbij road map," he said. Turkey has repeatedly called on the U.S. to stop backing the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units, or YPG, which it considers terrorists and an extension of a Kurdish insurgency within its own borders. The U.S.-backed force has been instrumental in fighting the Islamic Stategroup and pushing them out of northern Syria, including in Manbij. Canikli's comments w…

Your quadcopter drone may not survive after the French military spots it

Image
The Milad mobile anti-drone system, built by Communications & Systèmes, or CS, a specialist in mission-critical systems, is a military version of its Boreades civil system. It’s been adapted to meet requirements set by the Armed Forces Ministry, according to Egidio Cau, a technical director with CS, who spoke to Defense News on May 4. The Paris police deployed Boreades last year as part of security measures for the July 14 military parade on the Champs Elysées, a high-profile event at which French President Emmanuel Macron played host to his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump.
Today’s concern is that small, off-the-shelf UAVs might fly over sensitive sites such as airports and public events. Those drones could one day be armed with explosives and flown to hit a military target at home or abroad ― an approach already in use by militant organizations. ”The threat is commercial drones,“ Cau said. ”These are small drones, which anyone can buy; they are very small, have small radar signat…

Russia’s new robotic vehicle helps Strategic Missile Force clear mines in tactical drills

Image
Servicemen of a Novosibirsk-based missile formation of Russia’s Strategic Missile Force have used the Listva remote-controlled robotic mine-clearing vehicle for the first time in tactical drills, the Defense Ministry of Russia reported on Saturday. "The Novosibirsk missile formation used the newest Listva remote-controlled mine-clearing vehicle to escort Yars road-mobile missile complexes along the routes of combat patrolling," the Defense Ministry said, adding that the most advanced mine-clearing vehicle had been used only in military exercises before that. According to the tactical drills’ scenario, notional subversion groups planted ten remote-controlled explosives along the route of the column’s movement. The roadside bombs were intended to be detonated but were detected by the vehicle’s emitters. The explosives were blown up before the column of Yars missile complexes started its movement and all the planted bombs were destroyed. The Yars complexes stayed at a large di…

Panter Modernizasyonu Yakın | C4Defence

Image

SASC Pushes For More Hypersonics As Putin Flaunts New Weapons

Image
A Russian MiG-31 with a Kinzahl hypersonic missile. WASHINGTON The Senate Armed Services Committee is joining its House counterpart in calling for a big boost in research on hypersonic weapons research and defenses against rapidly developing Russian and Chinese capabilities. The SASC markup of the 2019 defense authorization bill calls on the director of the Missile Defense Agency to speed work on hypersonic defenses, adding $73 million for space-based sensors to track the objects hurtling through space at up to 10 times the speed of sound. Elsewhere in the markup, the lawmakers add almost $200 million to other accounts for hypersonic development and testing, as they rush to push though projects that Pentagon leaders say have fallen behind recent developments being made by the Russians and Chinese. On the defense side, the director of the Missile Defense Agency, Lt. Gen. Samuel Greaves, told Congress earlier this year that space-based sensors are “absolutely critical for the real threat t…

It Takes 41,500 Hours Of Labor To Build A Single F-35A According To New Report

Image
The first of the UK's F-35Bs arrived at RAF Marham today to much fanfare. It was a big, long-awaited milestone not only for the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, but also for the F-35 program. Meanwhile the U.S. Government Accountability Office, better known as the GAO, has released a new report on the status of the F-35 program overall. One of the most interesting tidbits in the report was metrics on how many man hours of labor it takes to manufacture each type of F-35 and how those numbers have changed over time. The chart below shows exactly how many labor hours are poured into constructing each F-35 variant on average. With the A model unsurprisingly being the lowest at 41,541 hours in 2017, the more complex B model taking 57,152 hours, and the carrier-capable C model coming in at 60,121 hours. These numbers generally vibe with the differential in cost of each type as well. But what's most intriguing is just how much these metrics have decreased over time, underlining that …

The Corps Must Do More with Unmanned Aerial Systems

Image
The Marine Corps only recently has begun fielding small unmanned aerial systems (UASs) at the platoon and squad level (and does not possess a single armed drone)—more than four years after ISIS began employing commercial drones in Iraq. Self-imposed restrictions by a risk-averse bureaucracy and delayed recognition of the value of such systems at small-unit tactical levels have slowed their adoption. Meanwhile, China employs a whole-of-government approach, with industry and universities developing autonomous drone swarms.[i]Across the globe, more than 90 countries possess military-grade drones; 27 have advanced drones capable of flying at least 24 hours; and 11 countries possess armed drones.[ii] The proliferation of voice, video, and data transmission technology has provided extraordinary capabilities to states and individuals alike. In Iraq and Syria, ISIS used commercial drones for surveillance, propaganda, and to deliver munitions. One Syrian rebel group launched an attack on a Ru…
