Forget the S-500 or Su-57 PAK-FA. Russia's Military Has Big Plans for the Future.

Russia has started planning for the development of a series of next-generation weapons to follow-on to systems such as the Sukhoi Su-57 PAK-FA and the S-500 surface-to-air missile (SAM) battery. These new systems—which the Russian government has not named—will be developed under future advanced State Armament Program.

“An important and key issue on our agenda is to define the beginning of the creation of yet another advanced state armament program,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting of the Kremlin’s Military Industrial Commission . Putin said that Russia has to start planning for its future defense needs now as it completes developmental programs that were funded under the current State Armament Plan (GPV-2027). “It is important for us to move further and start planning today the future development and production of advanced weapons and equipment that will define the image of the Russian Armed Forces in the long-term, for the next few decades,” Putin said. Think Before You Pledge Not to Build Military AI

Image
AP Photo/Khalid Mohammed AA Font size + Print Civilians walk amid the rubble after fight between Iraqi security forces against Islamic State militants in the eastern side of Mosul, Iraq, Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017. The machine-learning revolution has arrived. Artificial intelligence is rapidly conquering complex tasks, from facial recognition to autonomous navigation. But the ethical debate overAIis only just starting to catch up. Recently, for instance, employees at Google staged aminor revoltover the company’s work with the Department of Defense, which has placedAIat the center of its “Third Offset” strategy to maintainU.S.military superiority. Now, hundreds of companies (including Google’s DeepMind) and thousands of researchers havesigned a pledgeto “neither participate in nor support the development, manufacture, trade, or use of lethal autonomous weapons.” That is of course their right, and the pledge points to an important moral debate over the proper uses of AI. But there are at lea…

Safran tests developmental hybrid-electric propulsion system

Image
Safran has completed a first ground test of a hybrid-electric propulsion system designed for urban mobility vertical take-off and landing applications. The “distributed propulsion system” comprises a gas turbine engine coupled with an electrical generator and batteries, which power multiple electric motors driving propellers.
Safran says that the trial at its helicopter engines test facility near Pau-Pyrenees airport in France covered several operating modes, under which the electric motors were driven by battery power alone and by a combination of batteries and the gas turbine-generator assembly.
The system generated 100kW of electrical power.
In June, Safran and Bell revealed a partnership to develop hybrid-electric propulsion systems for aircraft providing “mobility on demand”.
The French manufacturer says the propulsion systems should facilitate “emergence of new VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) and STOL (short take-off and landing) aircraft”.
Safran Helicopter Engines vice-presiden…

Will UK’s ‘Tempest’ Fighter End In A Teapot?

Image
FARNBOROUGH AIR SHOW: The British government unveiled its £2 billion project to build an advanced fighter to succeed the Typhoon around 2030. Tempest concept With few military aircraft flying and not a lot of big news coming out of the show, you’d think this would have been a subject of much discussion. Nope. Given the history of dropped and failed programs across Europe, of programs that morphed from a single-country effort to ones built by two or three or four other countries, there’s been a great deal of dismissive skepticism among the cognoscenti gathered here. As for real fighters, an American F-16 from Germany flew here today, the first fighter to fly in three days of Farnborough. (OK, an F-35B flew during the opening, for a few seconds). Everyone bundled out to film and gape — and this is one of the most common fighters in the world, an aircraft that first flew in 1976. Think how people would have reacted to something genuinely new. It’s a lesson the various air forces and the…

Army Leaders Look to Hollywood for Answers on Force Modernization

Image
Tom Cruise in the sci-fi film 'Edge of Tomorrow'Photo by: Courtesy of Warner Bros Entertainment A senior Army modernization official said today that the service needs to look to the visionaries of Hollywood for ideas on how future tech could change the Army in 20 years. "I often tell people 'hey, if you want look to the future ... don't look toward the people that wear this,'" said Lt. Gen. Paul Ostrowski, principal military deputy to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology, pointing to his camouflage uniform. "Where are you going to look? Hollywood. Think about it. How many things do we have in our hands today, or just right around the corner, that you saw on the movies when you were growing up?" But it's up to Ostrowski, and other senior Army leaders, to carry out the service's ambitious new modernization strategy. The Army announced its new modernization effort in October that's designed to r…

How China Would Attack the US

Image
China’s Second Artillery Corps (recently renamed) — responsible for the maintenance and deployment of nuclear weapons — also received considerable attention. The Second Artillery began adopting new precision-strike weapons for attacks beyond China’s borders. In the event of a rapidly deteriorating crisis, the Second Artillery would have to speed toward the problem. This is where high-speed rail comes in. On most days, China’s high-speed rail network is for hauling millions — yes, millions — of commuters, vacationers and tourists around the country. But on May 14, 2015, one section of the growing network served a very different purpose. A People’s Liberation Army brigade from the Lanzhou military regionboarded a high-speed train[3] and set off for Xinjiang — 300 miles to the west. The exercise was a rapid and clever way to move troops around the huge country, something which Beijing is struggling to handle. China has the largest ground army and the longest land border in the world, which …

Russian strategic bomber to extend Kinzhal hypersonic missile’s range

Image
The range of the Kinzhal air-launched hypersonic missile will reach about 3,000 km aboard the new Tu-22M3 carrier bomber compared to over 2,000 km on board the MiG-31K fighter jet, a source in the domestic defense industry told TASS on Wednesday. "The Kinzhal is an air-launched missile system and, therefore, it is necessary to look at its range, considering the combat radius of its carrier. For the Tu-22M3, aboard which the missile will soon be tested, the hypersonic missile’s target destruction range will equal over 3,000 km," the source said. TASS

Pentagon Makes Massive New AI Push - Tanks, Ships, Weapons, Drones & Networks

Image
The Pentagon is making a massive push to accelerate the application of AI to ships, tanks, aircraft, weapons

The Pentagon is making a massive push to accelerate the application of artificial intelligence to ships, tanks, aircraft, drones, weapons and large networks as part of a sweeping strategy to more quickly harness and integrate the latest innovations.
Many forms of AI are already well-underway with US military combat systems, yet new technologies and applications are emerging so quickly that Deputy Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan has directed the immediate creation of a new Joint Artificial Intelligence Center.
“The Deputy Secretary of Defense directed the DoD Chief Information Officer to standup the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center in order to enable teams across DoD to swiftly deliver new AI-enabled capabilities and effectively experiment with new operating concepts in support of DoD's military missions and business functions."
