Putin said that Russia has to start planning for its future defense needs now as it completes developmental programs that were funded under the current State Armament Plan (GPV-2027). “It is important for us to move further and start planning today the future development and production of advanced weapons and equipment that will define the image of the Russian Armed Forces in the long-term, for the next few decades,” Putin said. How This Military-Developed Radar Technology Can Help Self-Driving Cars Navigate In Snowy Areas

Image
Self-driving vehicles use a combination of sensing technologies to be effective, usually optical cameras, and lidar. Unfortunately, both of these rely on reflected light and are made problematic by snowy conditions. However, there may be a way around it.

MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory long ago developed a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) system to help the military detect landmines. However a startup named WaveSense has been attempting to apply that technology to self-driving cars, and they may have just succeeded.
GPR scans the ground underneath a vehicle upto a depth of around 10 feet, building a picture of what’s going on beneath the surface you’re driving on. In self-driving cars, WaveSense compares this data to GPR data that’s previously been collected for road networks, and is then capable of placing the car to within even a few centimetres.
Sure, you can say that this technology relies on the roads being mapped beforehand, but then again so does lidar. In fact, WaveSense says remapping w…

Iran to unveil new fighter jet, develop missiles: minister

Image
Iran’s navy has mounted a locally built advanced defensive weapons system on one of its warships for the first time, the Iranian navy chief was quoted as saying on Saturday, as tensions mount with the U.S. military in the Gulf. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards confirmed earlier this month it held war games in the Gulf, saying they were aimed at “confronting possible threats” by enemies. The U.S. military’s Central Command confirmed it had seen increased Iranian naval activity, extending to the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway for oil shipments the Revolutionary Guards have threatened to block. Iran has been furious over U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of an international agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and re-impose sanctions on Tehran. Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi “reiterated that coastal and sea testing of the short range defense Kamand system were concluded successfully, and said this system was mounted ... on a warship and will be m…
