Forget the S-500 or Su-57 PAK-FA. Russia's Military Has Big Plans for the Future.

Russia has started planning for the development of a series of next-generation weapons to follow-on to systems such as the Sukhoi Su-57 PAK-FA and the S-500 surface-to-air missile (SAM) battery. These new systems—which the Russian government has not named—will be developed under future advanced State Armament Program.



“An important and key issue on our agenda is to define the beginning of the creation of yet another advanced state armament program,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting of the Kremlin’s Military Industrial Commission . Putin said that Russia has to start planning for its future defense needs now as it completes developmental programs that were funded under the current State Armament Plan (GPV-2027). “It is important for us to move further and start planning today the future development and production of advanced weapons and equipment that will define the image of the Russian Armed Forces in the long-term, for the next few decades,” Putin said. Russian Military Confirms Testing of Stealth Missiles During Large-Scale Drills

The ongoing Vostok-2018 drills, being held until next week in Siberia and Russia's Far East and involving all three branches of the military, have become the largest military exercises held by Russia in over 30 years. The Russian military has deployed special missile imitators using stealth technology and emulating advanced enemy missiles to test the capabilities of the 76th Air Defense Division in drilling in Buryatia, Siberia this week, division commander Colonel Sergei Tikhonov has said. According to the officer, in the simulated massed enemy missile attack, senior command complicated the drills by deploying special training copies of low-flying enemy cruise missiles, ballistic missile imitators and rockets emulating stealth technology. "During the drills, special missile target simulators with very low radar visibility were used which, to put it another way, are fitted with stealth technology. Gen. John "Mike" Murray testified at a hearing before the House Armed Services Committee's Subcommittee on Readiness to explain to lawmakers how the newly established Futured Command will change the Army's acquisition and modernization process. Rep. Trent Kelly, R-Mississippi, asked how the service is going to get ahead of near-peer threats such as Russia and China in long-range fires. Russian decision-making in Ukraine has demonstrated the ability to use cyber and information warfare to influence operations to support military and political objectives, and continued preparation of the cyber environment to create a range of options for future action.[i] The Russians were able to use Ukraine operations as a test for New Generation Warfare (NGW) to enhance the deep battle concept. Russia has adeptly executed deep battle, creating time and space to effectively employ limited ground forces and special operations to achieve desired effects. As the drone threat has continued to evolve, the technology used to counter them has also matured. Early solutions which may seemed janky and offbeat (such as using birds) have given way to those rooted in existing military technology. One common setup appears to have evolved: which integrates modern radar, electro-optical sensing, and jamming technology in a complete anti-drone system. Versions of this same concept are being created by different companies. But what are the limitations of this way of countering drones? How could it be upgraded to deal with future threats? The common setup usually revolves around three phases to counter drones: detection, tracking, and neutralization. The detection is usually carried out by a modern AESA search radar system. US military plans to power UAVs which can fly ‘indefinitely’ using lasers

The US military is developing a ground-based laser which can charge drones as they fly and potentially help them stay perpetually in flight. According to New Scientist, Army engineers working for the Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center in Maryland are developing a laser which could fire beams from distances of up to 1600 feet (487 meters) in order to charge photovoltaic cells aboard small drones. How does it work? We’ve previously brought you stories how the military can use lasers to shoot drones out of the sky, quite successfully it turns out. The purpose with this laser is quite different. The photovoltaic cells convert the heat from the laser and converts it into electricity. A major challenge of this system is that lasers generate enormous amounts of heat which can cause damage to the drone’s materials.  The Army is therefore working on making sure excess heat from the laser will dissipate and the photovoltaic cells are the only part of the drones…

WB Electronics reveals U-Gate, new software-defined radios

WB Group is developing a software-defined radio (SDR) for the export market that will support the company’s forthcoming Battle Overwatch and Strike Capabilities (BOSC) concept. The Personal Radio (PERAD) 6010 was in development ahead of an expected low-rate initial production (LRIP) by the end of the year, Adam Bartosiewicz, WB Group vice-president, told Jane’s at the MSPO exhibition in Kielce, Poland, on 5 September. Full-rate production is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2019, he added. Comprising a variant of the company’s PERAD 5010 – which is also in a development phase to support the Polish Land Forces’ TYTAN soldier modernisation effort – PERAD 6010 will operate across UHF and L-Band frequency ranges, with a variety of waveforms available to users including mobile ad hoc network (MANET), wideband, and narrowband. The radio, which will not feature embedded encryption technology, does feature frequency hopping, anti-tamper protection, and built-in GPS receiver technology. …

US military thinks soldiers are ready to control machines with their minds

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), a think tank for the Pentagon, hosted a three day symposium in celebration of its 60th anniversary this week. Highlights from the event included discussion of some of the most astounding projects the agency is currently working on. And of those, one in particular caught our eye: The N3, or Next Generation Nonsurgical Neurotechnology, program. We love DARPA because its job is to come up with wacky futuristic ideas and then see which ones the brass wants to pursue. And the N3 program is everything you hope for in a (not at all) secret military research project. The N3 program seeks to build a brain computer interface (BCI) that doesn’t require surgery or any invasive procedures. Basically they want to come up with a way to take existing external BCIs and make them fit for combat duty.
