Turkey would like to receive S-400 surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems as quickly as possible, despite US discouragement.

In a joint press conference in Moscow with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, on 14 March, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said, “The quicker we [Turkey] receive the S-400s, the better.” Lavrov added that Russia “will accelerate the delivery of S-400s [to Turkey]”.

Russian presidential aide Vladimir Kozhin told Russia’s Rossiya 24 TV on 12 March that Turkey’s wish for an acceleration of implementation of the S-400 contract would be met by deliveries of the air defence systems in early 2020. The agreement signed with Russia in late December 2017 already foresees delivery of the first system in March 2020.
