Turkey develops advanced Bora-2 long-range missile

Image
Defence Minister Nurettin Canikli said on 26 April that Turkey is developing a more advanced missile with a greater range than the Bora-1 (Storm) long-range surface-to-surface missile system, according to the Milliyet daily. Canikli did not give details about the new missile, the Bora-2, but recalled that the 280 km range Bora-1 is domestically produced and entered service in May 2017. The export version is called Kaan (Khan). Canikli pointed out that the range of these missiles is limited to 300 km as Turkey has to abide by rules prohibiting a longer range, referring to the Missile Technology Control Regime, which Turkey has signed. janes.com

The Block 4 F-35 Will Integrate the Small Diameter Bomb II and Auto-Ground Collision Avoidance

F-35 Mini-Series Part 3 - F-35's Future Weapons & Plans to fly to 2070

The Air Force has begun early testing, software development and weapons integration for its upcoming Block 4 variant of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, an emerging model intended to give the multi-role fighter a new dimension of attack mission possibilities, service leaders said.

The new version, to emerge in the early 2020s, will add new long-range precision-tracking weapons such as the Small Diameter Bomb II and also integrate a computer-generated automatic ground collision avoidance technology.

“The next step for F-35 weapons integration will be to address the weapon requirements within Block 4. Integration of the Small Diameter Bomb II has already begun, and flight test is scheduled to start as early as 2019,” Capt. Emily Grabowski, Air Force Spokeswoman, told Warrior Maven in a statement.

U.S. Army Reveals Next-Gen Aircraft Plans

Image
The U.S. Army intends to spend more on prototyping as it supports three new vertical lift programs: Future UAS, Future Attack/Reconnaissance Aircraft, and Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft.

The U.S. Army will pursue a mix of long-range, high-speed, agile unmanned and optionally piloted manned aircraft in its attempt to regain aviation dominance.
Brig. Gen. Walter Rugen, director of the Army’s Future Vertical Lift (FVL) Cross-Functional Team, says Army Aviation has been “outnumbered and outranged” by the weapon systems of potential adversaries, specifically Russia’s.
Speaking at the Army Aviation Association of America’s annual symposium on April 27, Rugen said the vast array of threats the U.S. military faces, from Moscow’s long-range air defense weapons to its aviation platforms, is “troubling.”
“We have to claw our way back to vertical lift dominance,” he says. “We also have to return the to the speed of historic programs.”
To meet this challenge, Rugen has revealed work on an “ec…

Recently published images indicate that China launched its second Type 055 destroyer on 28 April at the Jiangnan Changxingdao shipyard in Shanghai.Photo by: Via haohanfw.com While the first Type 055 was launched with considerable media coverage in June 2017, no official confirmation of the launch of the second one has yet to emerge. The Type 055 is the largest class of surface combatants built for the PLAN. It is 180 m (262 ft) long and is expected to displace more than 10,000 tonnes (11,023 tons), making it comparable in size to the US Navy’s Ticonderoga-class cruisers. janes.com

Could China Build Aircraft Carriers for Russia?

Image
The Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov has entered what is expected to be a substantial refit. Its performance in a recent deployment off Syria was not adequate; in addition to engine problems, it suffered flight-deck issues that contributed to the loss of two fighters, a substantial portion of its flight group. The readiness of Kuznetsov has suffered across its entire career, in large part due to a lack of experience and maintenance funding. As it is already nearly thirty years old, it is unclear how much more service the Russian Navy can wring from the hull.
And yet there is little reason to hope for a replacement on the near horizon. Despite occasional claims that a new carrier will be laid down soon, serious design work has yet to begin. Moreover, in a time of defense austerity, Russia seems to be deemphasizing its surface fleet. It is not at all clear that Russia could build an aircraft carrier in a reasonable time frame even if it wanted to.

But, what if Russia decided to …

Sierra Nevada and Textron to jointly bid again for Army aircraft

Image
Sierra Nevada and Textron reaffirmed their commitment to jointly bid on the US Army's Fixed-Wing Utility Aircraft programme using a new variant of the Beechcraft King Air 350 even though that aircraft was rejected in September 2017 by the service. The pair of manufacturers were the only bidder in the Army’s Fixed-Wing Utility Aircraft programme last year, but were rejected because the variant of the Beechcraft King Air 350 they submitted could not meet the service’s payload requirements without having a center of gravity that exceeded the limit established by Textron, according to the Government Accountability Office. The Army cancelled the solicitation because it did not receive other offers. An appeal by Sierra Nevada to the GAO was rejected in December. In January 2018, the Army relaunched its Fixed-Wing Utility Aircraft programme with the hope that more manufacturers would submit bids. Despite earlier rejection, Sierra Nevada and Textron are confident that they will be able to …

Russia, China, and the US are in a hypersonic weapons arm race — and officials warn the US could be falling behind

Image
A screenshot from a video showing off the maneuverability of Russia's Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle.YouTube/LEINI-TV Three of the most powerful nations on Earth — Russia, China, and the US — are in an arms race for hypersonic weapons and the US might be lagging behind. Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis said at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing this week that "hypersonics is the number one priority," for the US military's research and development. "Both having them for ourselves, but also the defense against them. It is our number one priority in the developing technology" realm, he said. Hypersonic weapons, along with AI, direct energy weapons, and robotics "will change the character of war," Mattis explained in his opening statement. There are two types of hypersonic weapons— hypersonic cruise missiles (HCMs), and hypersonic glide vehicles (HGVs). Both are capable of traveling at mach five or above — roughly 3,800 miles per hour or 340 …

Turkey to exhibit at Army-2018 - Russian MoD

Image
Turkey and seven more foreign countries have already confirmed participation of their national expositions in the Army-2018 international defense technology forum, deputy department head of the Russian Defense Ministry Major General Roman Kordyukov said on Saturday on the air with the Ekho Moskvy radio station. "Participation of eight foreign displays has been confirmed to date: these are Armenia, Belarus, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Pakistan, and Turkey," the official said, stressing that he refers to expositions and not to delegations. The Russian Defense Ministry earlier sent formal invitations to defense ministries of 128 countries. High attendance of foreign colleagues at the event is expected, Kordyukov noted. How the U.S. Army and Marines Are Preparing for Future Urban Wars

Image
Caption For Iraqis returning to Mosul, the homes missing roofs and walls, filled with rubble, are a reminder of what existed before ISIS took control of the city in 2014. To the U.S. Army that helped liberate the city — originally designed as a fortress — after a nine-month campaign, the ruins and a lingering threat are pointers to the future. Massive piles of tangled debris and burned cars line the streets, framing gutted houses. But though the main roads have mostly been cleared, side streets throughout the city remain blocked by tangled debris and riddled with explosives, left behind by ISIS in places that are too narrow for coalition vehicles to access. Mosul is the latest pointer to the urban nature of theaters in which many future conflicts may be set. Experts view situations the U.S. has found itself in over the past 15 years as foreshadowing a part of what the Army and the Marines may face with increasing regularity in the years ahead. It’s a future they are preparing for. A n…

Greece to upgrade its US F-16 military jets amid tensions with Turkey

Image
The plan to upgrade more than half of the Greek F-16 fighter jet fleet was approved during a special meeting of the government's Council on Foreign Policy and Defense (KYSEA) chaired by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras at the weekend, the PM's office said. "The council unanimously approved the implementation of the 85-plane upgrade program," according to Tsipras' office. Watch video02:09 Greece has 150 F-16 jets, some of which are nearly 30 years old. The upgraded planes will have capabilities similar to the much more advanced F-35 fighters, minus stealth technology. The price tag is expected to top out at $1.45 billion (1.2-billion-euros). The deal was originally announced last October during Tsipras' visit to Washington. But he quickly came under fire over the price tag, estimated then at $2.4 billion over 10 years. According to Defense Minister Panos Kammenos, the US had accepted a revised proposal, taking into account Greece's situation as it works throu…
