DARPA Launches Massive New "AI-Next-3rd WAVE"

DARPA seeks to leverage rapid advances in AI to help train data to make computer analysis more reliable

The Pentagon’s science and technology research arm is launching a vigorous push into a new level of advanced artificial intelligence, intended to integrate advanced levels of “machine learning,” introduce more “adaptive reasoning” and even help computers determine more subjective phenomena.

It is called the "AI-Next" effort, a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency program to leverage rapid advances in AI to help train data to make computer analysis more reliable for human operators, agency Director Steven Walker recently told a small group of reporters.

DARPA scientists explain the fast-evolving AI-Next effort as improving the ability of AI-oriented technology to provide much more sophisticated “contextual explanatory models.”

While humans will still be needed in many instances, the 3rd Wave can be described as introducing a new ability to not only provide answers and…

This laser could help Marines knock down drones on the FOB or on the move

A counter-drone laser in use by the Army was on display here this week, giving Marines a glimpse at how they might melt drones soon.

The Compact Laser Weapon System, or CLWS, is already part of the Army’s Mobile Expeditionary High Energy Laser program. It’s deployed on Stryker vehicle in Europe and has been used in field experiments.
The Boeing creation is a 5 kilowatt laser that can be used in a range of methods, including counter-drone, counter-sniper, breaching obstacles, setting of unexploded ordnance, denying enemy landing zones and to defend ports or airfields.
Soldiers in Europe now have Stryker-mounted lasers to shoot down drones. The lasers were tested in recent years at an annual fires event at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
Ron Dauk, program manager, Laser & Electro-Optical Systems, spoke with Marine Corps Times about the system for Boeing. They have developed 2-, 5-, and 10 kilowatt versions. The first 2 kilowatt version was tested at the Army’s annual Maneuver Fires Integrated…

F-35 LRIP 11 Signed: $89M For An F-35A

WASHINGTON: Just a day after the first-ever combat airstrike by an F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the Pentagon and prime contractor Lockheed Martin announced a new $11.5 billion contract for the next lot of fighters that brings the price of the base model, the F-35A, down below $90 million apiece for the first time. The timing is so tidy, and the press blitz so coordinated, that a skeptic might wonder if the strike planning and contract negotiation were coordinated. But these are genuine milestones, even if they don’t settle the debate. At least in terms of public perceptions, could this be the long-awaited turning point for the controversial stealth fighter after three decades of often-troubled development? The cost per plane has been coming down, as contractors learn to build the airplane more efficiently, efficiencies of scale start kicking in, and two successive program managers have played hardball on price, publicly berating Lockheed Martin. How much? Lockheed says it’s already bro…

Russia's new combat drone ready for maiden flight

Russia is about to complete the ground trials of the new combat unmanned aerial vehicle known as "Hunter." The new UAV will perform its maiden flight in the near future. The ground tests of the new vehicle were conducted in the Crimea and Novosibirsk.
"In October, it is planned to begin the final stage of frequency trials for the Hunter glider, after which it will be possible to talk about the readiness of the drone for its maiden flight," a source close to the Russian Defense Ministry said. Flight tests for the Hunter drone are scheduled for 2019.
Frequency, or vibration trials, are an important stage on the way to aerial trials. They make it possible to determine frequency drift in the design of an aircraft. As a rule, upon the completion of frequency trials, engineers give their conclusion required for the first flight of an aircraft.
The Hunter combat drone is developed by Sukhoi design bureau. All the tactical and technical characteristics of…

Civil-military integration of drones in China

Editor's note: Gai Keke is an associate professor at School of Computer Science and Technology in Beijing Institute of Technology, China. The article reflects the author's opinion and not necessarily the views of CGTN.  “Chinese drones” has become a buzzword in the private market since a few Chinese IT giants jumped into the pool, such as DJ and JD. The booming growth of Chinese drones likely makes China lead the race in the private sector and Chinese companies already take a major market share with a long list of products. When speaking to those behind the scene, there are many arguments for and against China's lead position. The question remains on whether China is at the forefront of the drone technology.  It is hard to estimate the stage of the Chinese drone technology, as various categories of drones with distinct purposes may be associated with different technical requirements, standards or evaluations. But there is a hint that possibly can provide a reference for posit…

Russia has started planning for the development of a series of next-generation weapons to follow-on to systems such as the Sukhoi Su-57 PAK-FA and the S-500 surface-to-air missile (SAM) battery. These new systems—which the Russian government has not named—will be developed under future advanced State Armament Program.

“An important and key issue on our agenda is to define the beginning of the creation of yet another advanced state armament program,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting of the Kremlin’s Military Industrial Commission . Putin said that Russia has to start planning for its future defense needs now as it completes developmental programs that were funded under the current State Armament Plan (GPV-2027). “It is important for us to move further and start planning today the future development and production of advanced weapons and equipment that will define the image of the Russian Armed Forces in the long-term, for the next few decades,” Putin said.
