Qatar has ordered 100 Altay tanks that will be produced in Turkey, Ali İhsan Yavuz, the vice-chair of Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party, told the media on 12 March. He said the first 40 Altays will be delivered to Qatar within the next two years.
The Presidency of the Turkish Defence Industries (SSB) signed in November 2018 a multibillion-dollar contract with the Turkish-Qatari armoured vehicles manufacturer BMC to produce 250 Altay tanks. The programme may lead to the procurement of 1,000 tanks in four tranches, the SSB said at the time.
He added that the first batch of 250 Altays for the Turkish Land Forces will be produced very quickly.
